The revolution is not an apple that falls when it is ripe. You have to make it fall.

About this quote

Meaning

This quote challenges the idea that social or political revolution is something that simply happens on its own once conditions are right. Guevara rejects a passive, deterministic view of historical change, arguing instead that transformation requires deliberate human effort and willpower. Ripeness alone is never enough; someone has to act.

Context

Guevara was a central figure in the Cuban Revolution and spent much of his life trying to export armed revolutionary struggle to other parts of Latin America and beyond. His thinking was shaped by a conviction that waiting for perfect conditions was a form of paralysis. This quote reflects his broader philosophy that committed individuals, organized into a guerrilla force, could create the conditions for revolution rather than simply waiting for them to appear naturally.
