I know you are here to kill me. Shoot, coward. You are only going to kill a man.

About this quote

Meaning

Spoken in the last moments of his life, these words are a statement of defiance and, in their own way, of calm. Guevara is not begging or bargaining; he is reframing the situation entirely. The person about to kill him can only end a physical life; they cannot undo everything that life has meant or done. By calling the shooter a coward, he shifts the moral weight of the moment, and by saying "you are only going to kill a man," he suggests that what he represents is larger than any single body.

Context

Guevara was captured by Bolivian forces, with the involvement of CIA operatives, in the village of La Higuera, Bolivia, in October 1967. He had been wounded and was being held when the order came to execute him. He reportedly spoke these words to the soldier sent to carry out the execution. The circumstances of his capture and death have been documented and debated extensively, and these final words have become among the most quoted last statements of any twentieth-century political figure.
