Context

The line comes from Book XII of Meditations, one of the later sections of the private notebook Marcus Aurelius kept throughout his adult life. Stoic practice emphasized regular self-examination, and short, memorable formulations like this one were tools for keeping core commitments present in the mind during a busy day. The symmetry of the two clauses, one for action and one for speech, reflects the Stoic concern with both deed and word as expressions of character.
