“Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.”
Dalai Lama
This line argues that genuine excellence in any field is inseparable from genuine passion. Jobs was not simply encouraging people to enjoy their jobs; he was making a stronger claim: that the sustained effort, resilience, and creativity required to produce truly great work can only be sustained by someone who loves what they are doing. Without that love, the inevitable difficulties of any demanding pursuit will cause a person to give up or settle for mediocrity.
Jobs delivered this line during his commencement address at Stanford University in June 2005. The speech is widely regarded as one of the most memorable graduation addresses ever given. In it, he told three personal stories drawn from his own life, and the line about loving your work came as part of his advice to the graduating class about finding a career that felt meaningful. He spoke candidly about being fired from Apple and about facing serious illness, framing both experiences as lessons about the importance of pursuing work that truly matters to you.
Steve Jobs co-founded Apple in the 1970s and went on to lead the development of products that reshaped how people interact with technology, including the personal computer, the iPod, the iPhone, and the iPad. He was also involved with Pixar during its formative years. Known for his intense focus on design and user experience, he became one of the most influential figures in modern technology and business. He died in October 2011.
