“You have power over your mind, not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”
Marcus Aurelius · Meditations
This line makes a fundamental point about the nature of character: we are not defined by our intentions, our occasional choices, or even our peak moments, but by the habits we practice consistently over time. Excellence, virtue, and skill are not fixed traits we either possess or lack. They are patterns of behavior built gradually through repetition. Who we are, in other words, is largely the product of what we do every day.
This idea appears in Nicomachean Ethics, one of Aristotle's major works on moral philosophy. In that text, Aristotle explored what it means to live a good and flourishing human life. A central argument is that virtues are not innate qualities but are developed through practice, much as a person becomes a skilled musician by playing music repeatedly. The surrounding passage makes the case that character is shaped by action, not merely by knowledge or desire.
Aristotle was a Greek philosopher of the fourth century BCE who studied under Plato and later founded his own school of thought. His work covered an extraordinarily wide range of subjects, including logic, biology, politics, poetics, and ethics. Nicomachean Ethics remains one of his most studied texts and continues to influence philosophy, psychology, and discussions of character and personal development. His ideas about habit and virtue have found a lasting home in modern thinking about behavior change and self-improvement.
