“Hana, dul, sae!”
Minions · Despicable Me franchise
This rapid, repeated sound is the noise Minions make when imitating a fire alarm or siren. It is onomatopoeia in its purest form: the phrase does not describe an emergency, it simply recreates one in sound. Within the film it signals urgency and panic in a way that is simultaneously alarming and completely ridiculous, which is exactly the tonal balance the Despicable Me films aim for.
The phrase appears in the original Despicable Me film released in 2010, and it became one of the most quoted and imitated lines from the entire franchise. The scene in which Minions race around making this noise to warn of danger plays the situation both straight and for laughs at the same time. It is a good example of how the films use the Minions as a kind of anarchic comic chorus, punctuating the main story with bursts of chaotic energy.
The Minions were created for the Despicable Me animated franchise produced by Illumination Entertainment. Small, yellow, and perpetually enthusiastic, they function as a group character rather than individuals, though several have been given distinct personalities across the series. Their popularity led to a standalone origin film and a great deal of merchandise and internet culture. Pierre Coffin serves as their primary voice actor and was a co-director on multiple films in the series.
