Context

Alice says this early in the 1865 novel by Lewis Carroll, at a moment when she has just experienced another bewildering physical change and finds her situation growing more baffling by the second. Carroll gave Alice a habit of thinking aloud and reaching for words that are not quite right, which makes her feel both childlike and surprisingly philosophical. The line has become one of the most quoted phrases from the entire book, often used shorthand for any situation that spirals delightfully beyond normal explanation.

Lewis Carroll was the pen name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a nineteenth-century English writer and Oxford mathematics lecturer. His work on the Alice books showed a sharp ear for the way children actually speak, including their confident misuse of grammar, and he turned that quality into a literary strength rather than correcting it away.
