Context

Seneca wrote this in his letters to a friend named Lucilius, a collection of personal essays in letter form that explore how to live wisely under the pressure of mortality. The letters were written in the later period of his life, when he was reflecting seriously on time, purpose, and the Stoic ideal of a life guided by reason and ethics. This particular idea runs throughout his work: that most people waste their years not because they are short but because they are not truly inhabited.
